Growing your own tomatoes in a Steeltech Greenhouse
Don’t let another year go by without growing your own tomatoes!
Tomatoes are the gardener’s favourite food to grow.. And it’s not hard to see why!
Home grown tomatoes are sweet, juicy and bursting with flavour.
A perfectly ripe tomato from your own garden is the true taste of summer. And it’s a lot easier than you think to grow them yourself.
This is the perfect time to start…so what are you waiting for?
There are so many varieties to choose from. My own favourite is Sungold which produces abundant crops of explosively sweet and juicy cherry tomatoes throughout the the summer.
Whether you’re growing from seed or planting seedlings from the garden centre, tomatoes need light and heat to grow ( seeds need a constant soil temperature of at least 60 degrees and preferably 80 degrees to germinate)
Our cold Irish springs and unreliable summers just don’t suit tomatoes. But you can replicate their ideal Mediterranean growing conditions in a greenhouse.
Steeltech greenhouses are the perfect place to grow tomatoes
(and all other tender fruit and veg, of course)
Our precision engineered galvanised frames, are tough and durable and they come with the Steeltech Lifetime Guarantee.
I know only too well how many jobs always need doing in the garden so I made sure that our Steeltech greenhouses were guaranteed maintenance free for life.
It’s wonderful to be able to grow peaches and grapes, peppers and chillies. But for me, there’s nothing to beat picking a handful of perfectly ripe sweet tomatoes. Add a few basil leaves and you have the basis of the perfect summer lunch
(Tip: grow basil beside your tomatoes as it thrives in the same growing conditions as its culinary partner)
Did you know?
It’s no wonder that homegrown tomatoes taste so much better than those you buy in the supermarket. That’s because those tomatoes you pick up from the supermarket shelf have been grown with two things in mind: they have to travel well and they have to stay looking good for as long as possible. Unfortunately, flavour is not the top priority!
I bet you’ve bought tomatoes which looked great but when you tasted them, they had little or no taste. But you know, that’s hardly surprising when you realise that they’re often grown without soil in an artificial fertiliser solution. It’s hardly surprising that they have so little flavour!
Do your heart a favour!
Like many people, I’ve become more conscious of eating well.
I was very interested to discover that homegrown tomatoes have a much more complex chemical makeup than those which are commercially produced. Homegrown tomatoes are a good source of vitamins A and C and have a higher level of lycopene, which is associated with reducing the risk of heart disease, by helping to unclog arteries.
If only every healthy eating choice tasted as good!
You’ve decided! This summer you’ll be eating your very own delicious tomatoes.
So where do you start?
Well, the first step is to call in to your nearest Steeltech branch and have a look at our range of greenhouses. Our experienced staff can advise on the size you need.
Our greenhouses range from the compact 2m x 2m (7’x7’) up to the spacious 6m x 3m (20’x10’)
We have designed the clear polycarbonate panes to withstand UV rays and avoid discolouration and you can choose from natural trim colours olive, slate and brown to blend with your garden planting.
And we can kit out your new greenhouse with whatever potting benches and shelving you need.
🍅 Don’t use very cold compost that has been sitting in a garage all night. Bring the bag into the house the night before planting to warm it up slightly.
🍅 Use lukewarm water for watering
🍅 Water directly on the soil, not on the leaves.
🍅 Remove non-fruiting branches to direct the plant’s energy into growing stronger, better fruit
There’s no time like the present. Don’t put it off for another year- come and talk to us about growing your own tomatoes and enjoy your very own crop this summer.
Don’t forget to tell them Sean sent you!
All the Best,
